[Demo] Lyrics adapted from The Cruel Mother / Greenwood Sidey (Child 20; Roud 9), a widely-collected murder ballad across Britan that spread to Ireland and North America. Alone in the woodland, a woman gives birth to two illegitimate children, which she then kills and buries. She later sees two children and tells them if they were hers, she would dress them in fine clothes and care for them sweetly, upon which the children reply that they were indeed her own, and she did not do so, for she brutally murdered them. She sees the children repeatedly and eventually accepts her crime and asks her fate. The children fortell she must commit numerous penances each lasting seven years (the same ending appears in The Well Below the Valley / The Maid and the Palmer (Child 21; Roud 2335) and is likely to have been borrowed). Printed ballad versions are extant from the late-1600s in England, though believed by some to originate as a far older folkloric tale of infanticide, with close parallels found in Scandinavian balladry.
